{Happy Halloween}

Are you stuffed on candy?  I’m not.  You see, we live out in the middle of no where and there are no trick or treaters that come to our house.  I remember my first year living out here, I carved pumpkins, and bought lots of candy, but alas my doorbell never rang.  It was a sad day for my waistline.  I don’t think it has recovered yet.  I can’t say that I really miss the candy, but it is really fun to see all the costumes.

I spent a few minutes at the park after work today photographing these two cuties so I did get to see a couple of costumes!

Without further ado….Miss B the chicken and Miss J the bumble bee.

This one cracks me up.  Miss J said “Ohhhh I like your fur!” and Miss B said “Don’t you love my orange tights?”  Well, I guess I don’t really know what they said.  It sounded like jibber jabber, but it was really cute.

{Jesse}

This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking senior photos for Jesse who is a senior at Ellsworth High School.

And even though I am a K-State fan, the KU beanie was pretty cool.

And last but not least, a smile for mom. :)

{I Meant To Do That}

Make no mistake, my work is unique! I have a style of my own and it is somewhat uncoventional. My clients are usually looking for something fresh, stylish and more contemporary than what many “traditional” photographers offer.

That being said, there are some things you may notice when looking at my work that is different from what you might be accustomed too.  Below is a couple of explanations of what I am talking about, along with some recent blog images do demonstrate the idea.

Tight Crops-This means super close close-ups where often the face fills most of the frame of the image. These images are about the eyes, and often the top of the head is not included in the image. I meant to do that!

Not-So-Smiley- So many of us have been brought up to believe that a smile is a requirement to make a great photo. So not true! I love a pensive look as much as a big grin. I meant to do that!

Let’s Be Negative-Negative space is when the subject is placed off to the side of an image and the rest of the image is empty, this is done for artistic impact. I meant to do that!

Left of Center- The most boring position for a subject in a photograph is smack dab in the middle! I know, I know, not what you always thought, right? Trust me! There is a little something in design called the Rule of Thirds that we photographers often employ to enhance visual interest.  Trust me, the subject does not need to be right in the center of an image for it to be a good portrait! I meant to do that!

The Light in the Eyes- The hallmark of good portrait photography is good lighting, and the hallmark of good lighting is something called a “catch light,” or a reflection of light in the eyes. I love big catch lights! I purposely position my lights (or my subject in relation to the light) for the best and largest catch lights, especially for close-ups. Flip through any parenting or glamour magazine and look at the eyes, what do you see? Big bright catch lights! A lack of catch lights leaves the eyes looking flat, dull and lifeless.

I meant to do that!

Fun Processing – Variety is the spice of life right?  Sometimes I add textures or do special processing or coloring to images to enhance the visual impact.  Rest assured there is nothing wrong with your photo, it’s just an artistic treatment that makes the photo fun and unique to you.  Below is a photo with a vintage feel.  I meant to do that!

{The S Kids}

This past weekend I had the pleasure of photographing D and Miss K.  Our session was pretty early and it was really cold outside.  (I just don’t think I am ready for winter yet).

For being cold, both kids were such troopers!  Here are my favs of each of them from the session.
